The very first weapon you pick up in Destiny is an unassuming auto rifle with low damage and no perks called the Khvostov. And while you probably traded it out or dismantled it the moment you got something better, Rise of Iron is bringing it back in a big way - as an Exotic quest reward. You'll have to go out of your way to find the start of said quest, but thankfully a Redditor has already figured out the steps needed and posted a guide for everyone to follow.
According to Jase_the_Muss, there are two main methods to gaining the quest "We Found A Rifle". The easiest is to take an existing Khvostov and dismantle it, which will give you the item "Khvostov 7G Schematic". The other is to patrol the Plaguelands, specifically hunting down Hive Brood Mothers. These monsters will sometimes drop a "Splicer Intel Relay," which leads you to a Pilot Servitor aboard a nearby Ketch. Kill the Servitor and a chest containing the schematics should open up.
From there, you'll need to collect parts for your new gun, as well as manual pages. Pages can be farmed from killing splicers, while the parts are in specific locations around the Plaguelands and Rocketyard. Redditor Azylir has compiled screenshots of these locales so you can go exactly where you need to.
One is where the game begins, in a ship near your very first spawn point.
Another is located near the first ship you collect.
Two more are located within the area utilized by the Sepiks Prime Strike.
Once you have all the pieces you need, you should unlock the quest, "A Khvostov Rising". Complete it and an Exotic version of Destiny's first gun is yours.
