Destiny 2 will be "a completely different game" from the original Destiny, if multiple anonymous sources are right. The proper follow-up to the online shooter has gone through several iterations, but it sounds like Bungie has finally settled on an approach that will be very difficult to mistake for another big update.
“D2 is a completely different game,” one source told Kotaku. “The Taken King was a reboot for Destiny 1 to fix small things. This is the overhaul to fix big things.” Four DLC expansions later and Destiny still has a lot of not-quite-tapped potential to make good on, so consider me Very Interested.
According to the report, Destiny 2 will focus on making each planet feel more active and complete, with towns, outposts, and missions of their own - so-called "play-in destinations". Sounds like the Felwinter Peak social space, which Guardians reclaim in Destiny: Rise of Iron's first mission, could be a preview for Destiny 2's new direction. NeoGAF poster benny_a (who had some previously unreported details that Kotaku verified, like Activision studio Vicarious Visions helping out with development) also claimed that the game will have Raid matchmaking.
Another big change for the sequel is that you'll apparently be able to play it on PC. Bungie's been a console-first developer ever since Halo: Combat Evolved back in 2001, so this would a pretty big change. But Oni's PC version was pretty good so I'm sure it'll all work out.
