Say Hello to My Little Sidelit Friend in Our GBA Anniversary Stream [Now Archived]

It's Thursday, so you know what that means: It's the day you worry about the world ending. Oh, and also, it's the day you watch someone from USG play old games for an hour. This week, that duty falls to me, after a slight delay from last week.

I'll be streaming old games next week as well, because today's live studio performance is the first of a two-part affair wherein we celebrate the wonders of the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. The system celebrates its 15th anniversary on March 21, if you can believe that. As the sands of the hourglass, and all that, and I'll be marking Time's inexhorable march by digging up some of my favorite GBA carts to play for you.

As is my obsession, I'll be playing on real hardware — specifically, a GameCube Game Boy Player. In a perfect world, I'd make big promises about playing them with perfect fidelity, but I'm afraid I'm still getting my GameCube up to code (at some point in the near future, a region modification and homebrew software will enter the picture). In the meantime, you'll have to accept that these games will look comically stretched thanks to the GameCube Player's weird handling of progressive video, unless I can figure out how to tweak the settings. Still, what you'll be seeing accurately represents the best possible GBA big-screen experience that was legitimately possible back in the day, so that sounds suitably rose-tinted for my purposes.

As for which games I'll be playing... well, I'll let that remain a mystery. I will say that the stream kicks off with a romp through one of my favorite Mario spin-offs of all time, Wario Land 4. From there, though? Expect mysteries and surprises. Maybe a game that never came to the U.S.? Who knows! I can't promise expert play, but I'll try to dribble out plenty of facts and trivia.

I'll begin playing at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific). I'll play a variety of GBA titles for an hour, then pick up where I left off with next week's stream. Please join me!
